One Step At A Time. . .

Back in the Civil War era slaves did not know how to read or right. In some places, it was even considered illegal. The same applied for African Americans. in some cases, slave owners would sometimes teach them, or they find out through another way secretly. Slaves wanted to read and write because it was seemed to be an advancement in their time and was more professional. Many slaves wanted to read the bible, so they wanted to learn how. If they got caught they were punished or worse. Many did not approve to the literacy at that time.
